The exclusive Nikki Beach has become a global brand for wealthy party-goers. Francesca Hoyles went to Marbella to see what all the fuss is about.

    What’s it all about?

Decking, simple table settings and bright white sails set off the Mediterranean blues of sea and sky

The first Nikki Beach opened its doors a decade ago in Miami. Today, there are 12 of these ‘beach clubs’ worldwide (other locations include Saint-Tropez, St Barts and Marrakech) and Nikki Beach is a global lifestyle brand for wealthy jet-setters.

The Marbella branch sells itself as an exclusive beach club, restaurant and nightclub. To reinforce this, the staff wears t-shirts emblazoned with the words “tell only your best friends”.

But in reality, as long as you’re willing to splash out upwards of €130 for a bottle of champagne – the most expensive is a magnum of Cristal Roederer Vintage 1999 which sells for the princely sum of €1750 – Nikki Beach is fairly accessible.

    Why bother?

Decking, simple table settings and bright white sails set off the Mediterranean blues of sea and sky and make it an attractive al fresco venue on the beach.

Add house music and an affluent crowd who like to show off, and the stage is set for some hugely entertaining people watching.

Live DJ sets, periodically punctuated by funky electric violin and drumming, are complimented by mesmerisingly pert and jiggly semi-naked dancing girls. Above the beach bar area is the nightclub, which plays host to private parties and club nights including London’s Sintillate.

    To eat and drink?

Three-litre bottles of rose (so ostentatiously large that they dwarf the waiters) are all the rage with lunch. Champagne and cocktails are a must at other times.

The menu features global cuisine with European, Asian and South American influences – shrimp pil pil is listed alongside empanadas, salads and sushi. There are also big sharing platters to eat tapas-style with drinks.

    Give it a miss…

If you don’t like posing in your bikini, wearing heals on the beach or spending a small fortune on drinks. You should come here to be seen; from behind obligatory shades (people even wear them in the nightclub), eyes are scanning the surroundings to work out who’s looking at who. If you’re more Marks and Spencers than Dior or Armani, it’s probably not for you.

    Who goes?

Prince Albert of Monaco, Real Madrid players, pop stars and, more generally, a real mix of nationalities – lots of Europeans and South Americans – and ages. You’ll see portly middle aged men alongside sculpted (the surgically enhanced are everywhere) younger woman and, despite the scantily-clad podium dancers, lots of families at the Nikki Beach’s lunchtime sessions.

    What’s the service like?

The super-efficient, friendly waiters and waitresses know their stuff and are almost intimidatingly good looking. When asked if this was a prerequisite for the job, one waitress answered “oh very much so. You should see them in the kitchen”.

The washboard-stomached waitresses whiz around the restaurant area making sure everything is running smoothly. Keeping the diners happy can prove lucrative – rumour has it that, last summer, a waitress received a €2000 tip.

    Don’t forget to pack…

If you want to fit in, the uniform for girls is bikini, wedges and sunglasses (for the beach and bar), and something light, white (so as to match the décor) and floaty for the dining area. For boys, it’s chinos, shorts or denim and polo shirts.

There is a little shop where you can pick up Nikki Beach merchandise, including t-shirts with messages like “I’m friends with the owner” and “Pick me! I’m pretty and rich.”

    What’s the damage?

Three courses with wine, per person: €70.

    Jeroboam (three-litre bottle) of Nikki’s Rose: €169

    Bottle of beer: €8

    Vodka and coke: €10

    Glass of wine: 9€

    Nikki Beach Marbella

The Costa del Sol has many beach clubs, but probably the most famous and ostentatious is the Nikki Beach club, situated in Elviria, east of Marbella. It’s basically an upmarket restaurant and lounge club rolled into one, located right on the beach. There are huge white King size leather beds and four-poster hammocks which you can hire, while waiters and waitresses flit to and fro taking your champagne order as you relax on the beach. Every drink is available, including some fancy cocktails. Nikki Beach also has one of the best sea-views anywhere on the coast and is immaculately designed and maintained. All of this comes at a price of course, so be prepared to get your credit card out! Nikki Beach also hasbands and guest DJs on selected nights, and is a well-known venue for visiting celebrities, film crews, and fooballers.

The balmy evenings in Marbella make it a great venue for chilling out at night, and seriously topping up your posing credentials. Nikki Beach is actually part of a chain of beach clubs. The others are located across the world in places like Miami, New York, Sardinia, and St. Tropez. The Marbella one though is famous for its yearly ‘white’ party, where guests are strictly required to wear only white clothing (shirts, skirts, shoes, bras, everything!). Most of the coast’s movers and shakers attend, and tickets are scarce.

The food at Nikki Beach is served up al fresco and is quite spectacular, especially their seafood spread, which contains excellent sushi. You may think it a bit of a risk to only have an outside restaurant at the mercy of the elements, but even the occasional splash of rain (which is rare) is kept at bay by some fantastic canopies, which do the trick perfectly. Contrary to what many people think, you don’t actually need to be a member to go to Nikki Beach, but taking out membership does come with certain privileges, like jumping the queue, getting priority on VIP areas, early warning of special parties etc......you get the picture. So overall, if you want to seriously impress, and you’ve got the money to do it, then Nikki Beach is for you. Don’t have any illusions of finding anything Spanish there - it’s not that sort of place. But as beaches go, it really does command one of the best spots in southern Spain.
