I want to buy a 55-200mm and the non-VR lense is much cheaper. Is it worth it?

  1. i bought that lense when i bought my nikon d40 and have rarley used it, the lense on the camera does most everything i need it to.

What are you photographing  that you want a new lense? are you professional?

  2. try yahoo shopping or beachcamera.com

  3. Yes VR helps, in low light situations and when zoomed into tele-end.

As general rule, to get a sharp image, your shutter speed has to be reciprocal of your focal length. i.e if you are zoomed in to 200mm, shutter speed has to be at least 1/200th of second or more. If you are using VR, then you can go upto 1/15s (3 stop advantage).

On a bright sunny day VR may not give you an advantage. If you shoot a lot in low light, like evenings, then VR is a huge advantage.

  4. Yes VR can be a big help. It will let you shoot at a slower shutterspeed handheld than you could otherwise do. It also will eliminate some of the lens shake that can be a problem when zoomed out. I think if you do not spend the extra for VR you may wish you had down the road.

  5. i have that lens! and yes, the VR enables like 1 or 2 fstops faster, great since i use a circ. pol. filter so its like getting the results without the blur!
