i just read recently from Ken Rockwell's site (http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/24-70mm.htm) that the recycling traingle with the number 10 inside means that it's to be replaced after 10 years. Is this true??!! I always thought that it meant it was made of a compound of materials seeing as 1-7 are plastics. Can someone confirm this...? It'd be such a waste you know... Thanks in advance!!!

  1. Why would you throw out something that still works? That sounds like a buy new stuff gimmick to me. I have a Nikkor 50mm that has to be at least 20 years old. It was bought with a camera for me around my 10th birthday and I am now 31. Both the camera and lens work great.

  2. I think you have misunderstood Mr. Rockwell.

The lenses in his "recycle" bin are donated to him when the owners have replaced them with newer lenses and no longer need the old lens.

Nikon lenses (as others) last for decades and are only replaced after a traumatic event like a fall or quick dunk in the ocean.

I have four lenses dating from the early 1970's that I still use on my D3 and D300.  Each have properties that I either cannot duplicate with today's lenses or have larger apertures than my zoom lenses with the same focal lengths..

  3. No, don't throw out your lenses, unless you want to give them to me.
