Nikolas Tombazis says exhausts will again play an important role in 2013 – Formula 1 news
Ferrari chief designer, Nikolas Tombazis has said that the exhausts will once again play an important role in the 2013 Formula 1 season.
Most of the teams faced immense problems in 2012 because of the changes in rules and regulations by FIA and especially due to the ban on double diffuser. Although, the teams worked really hard to increase the downforce of their cars without the use of double
diffuser, but they could not capitalise on their developments.
Nevertheless, the contenders have come up with an idea of using the Coanda effect exhaust layouts in their cars in order to get the desired downforce as there will be no radical changes in the rules by FIA in this season.
Therefore, Tombazis has said that the performance of the teams will largely depend on their exhaust layout development during the season. Furthermore, he said that the Italian team is not the only contender which is working on its exhaust design to come
up stronger.
Besides, he said that they are looking forward to make some essential developments in their car throughout the season so as to perform well in this year’s championship.
“With the exhaust exits we can reckon on updates during the season and while the differences might not be visible, they could offer a significant margin for improvement,” he said. “Of course, we won't be the only ones working on this area, the others will
too. Bit by bit, as the regulations stay the same for longer, the room for invention decreases, but with the exhausts there is still much that can be done. Furthermore, as great improvements in simulation tools come along, this produces better correlation
of data and of the methodology of the various configurations that are tested.”
Moreover, he said that they struggled a lot because of their exhaust layout in the preceding season because of which they failed to match the pace of their main rival, Red Bull Racing. Nonetheless, he asserted that they are aiming to take a strong start
in this season with a fairly competitive car as compared to the previous season.
