Nikolas Tombazis thinks Ferrari has a good chance in European Grand Prix – Formula 1
Ferrari’s cheif designer, Nikolas Tombazis, has said that his team will be front runners in the European Grand Prix in the 2011 Formula 1 season after having delivered a competitive car in the previous two races of the season.
However, Nikolas also stated that the next few races of the circuit are going to decide Ferrari’s chances at winning the championship in the 2011 season.
The Ferrari team has had the best two races of the 2011 season in Monaco and Montreal where for the first time their car seemed competitive. Although the results were still not satisfactory for the team as Fernando Alonso crashed out and Felipe Massa only
managed a sixth place finish, Nikolas thinks that Ferrari have shown some good progress in the season.
“We were able finally in Monaco and Canada to be serious contenders for the win, even though the expected result did not come our way. We were competitive because of two factors; the first is the characteristics of those two circuits which suited our car,
second factor is the development brought to the cars,” commented Nikolas.
The engineer also stated that the next few races will decide the chances of the Scarlet team in the 2011 season. “How well these next few race go will decide whether or not we feel we are still in with a chance of fighting for the championships this year,
even if we are quite a long way behind in the points,” added Nikolas.
Ferrari team struggled in the opening five races of 2011 Formula 1 to catch up with the pace setter Red Bull and McLaren. However, in Spain and Turkey Alonso managed a podium place finish and the real picture of Ferrari’s pace was seen in Montreal when the
duo showed some exceptional speed in the qualifiers.
The team is third on the constructors’ table with 101 points but it will be interesting to see how much the Scarlet team benefits from the clamp down on the blown diffuser which is supposed to hurt the Red Bull team.
