Nikolay Davydenko crushes Roberto Carballes Baena to enter round two – Barcelona Open 2013
Former world number three, Nikolay Davydenko, eased past the local wild card entrant, Roberto Carballes Baena, with a breadstick at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell 2013 on Monday. He notched up a 6-1, 6-4 success against the Spaniard to power into the second
round at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 500 series event held in Barcelona, Spain.
The Russian veteran re-kindled his spark at this clay court tournament. He barely sweated to outclass Carballes Baena in their first encounter and eventually booked a spot in the second round.
Davydenko stormed into this match. He went on a four-game killing spree before Carballes Baena could come on the score sheet. The Russian cashed another break chance after that and eventually pulled out the opener with a breadstick.
Currently ranked 41st in the Emirates Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Davydenko kept momentum railing in the proceeding set. He got the coveted break in the opening game and jumped to a 2-0 lead. The Russian levelled the scores in the fourth
game but broke again, eventually taking a 3-2 lead. Despite gifting away his serve in the sixth game, Davydenko stayed focused. He got the breakthrough in the ninth game and subsequently clinched the set with a 6-4 score line.
The Russian star clobbered an impressive first serve share of 70 per cent as opposed to his opponent’s 52 per cent. He also brilliantly marked 24 out of 40 points on it and ruled the battle. Davydenko took full advantage of the many double faults the wild
card recipient spilled and ended the match with 62 points.
Next in queue for Davydenko is the third seed, Tomas Berdych from Czech Republic. He will face off the seeded Czech for the 12th time. Berdych trails in the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head series by 2-9 against the Russian. However, he has conquered in
his last two encounters and is in great run of form.
Dmitry Tursunov will accompany his compatriot in the second round. He triumphed over the Uzbekistani star, Denis Istomin, in straight sets. The Russian contender required a single break of serve in each set to steal the limelight.
