Nikolay Davydenko downs Sanam Singh to reach round two – Proton Malaysian Open 2012
Russian contender, Nikolay Davydenko, tumbled the Indian lucky loser, Sanam Singh, in straight sets at the Proton Malaysian Open 2012 on Wednesday. He nudged up a 7-5, 6-4 success against the world number 373 to secure a place in the round of 16 at the Putra
Indoor Stadium in Bukit Jalil in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The Ukrainian-born showed exceptional skills to outsmart Singh in their first outing at this indoor hard court stadium. He needed one hour and 43 minutes to steal the show and take lead in the FedEx ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Head 2 Head Series
by 1-0 against the 24-year-old.
Davydenko thundered into this ATP World Tour 250 Series event. He drew the first blood in the opening game and jumped to a 2-0 lead. The Russian lost his proceeding serve but broke the Indian’s serve once again to take a 3-2 lead. Despite losing his edge
again in the very next game, Davydenko stayed focused and swiped his remaining serves with poise. He got the breakthrough in the 11th game and clinched the opener with a 7-5 score line.
Ranked 44th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Davydenko maintained consistency in his game in the proceeding set. He got the coveted break in the opening game and took the initial lead. Apart from losing his serve in the following
game, the Russian stayed calm and kept his serves with poise. Davydenko got the breakthrough in the fifth game and bagged the set with a 6-4 success.
Davydenko will next face the Uzbekistani star, Denis Istomin, who stunned sixth seeded Pablo Andujar in straight sets to set up this duel. Istomin failed to block the lone breakpoint he faced but cashed in half of the four break chances, eventually sealing
the deal with a 6-3, 6-2 score line in one hour and 13 minutes.
The fifth seed, Feliciano Lopez, stole the limelight later that day. He was broken once but capitalised on three out of five break chances to manipulate a 6-3, 7-6(3) success against Slovakia’s Lukas Lacko. The Spaniard smashed five aces and finished the
match with 79 points.
