Nikolay Davydenko edges pass Florian Mayer to take the BMW Open title at Munich
Twenty eighth ranked Russian veteran, Nikolay Davydenko beat all odds to overcome the fifth seeded German, Florian Mayer in the final of the BMW Open, being played at the MTTC Iphitos complex in Munchen, Germany on Sunday. The
seventh seeded Russian took down the home favourite Mayer after an enthralling three-set matchup, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, in one hour and forty nine minutes to bag the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 event.
It was the 14th victory for Davydenko in the running ATP season, earning him his first title of the year. The Russian had suffered a defeat from Mayer at the Australian Open but overwhelmed him this time round to improve
his all-time head-to-head record against the German to 3-2. It was the first ATP title victory for the Russian since early 2010 at Doha but he has returned to the top-30 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings on Monday.
“In finals I just feel stronger, more relaxed, my confidence is very high and I just go out there fighting," expressed the champion in his post match reviews, “It was a very important result here and I’m just so happy. At the beginning
I played solid, but then maybe I lost concentration. I thought I was winning easily and then he started to play better. For sure it was not so easy to come back in the second set. Then I started concentrating better at the beginning of the third set, fighting
for every point and 6-1 for me was a very good result.”
The seventh seeded Russian had a brilliant start to the game, firing four aces and breaking his opponent one out of four times to bag the opening set at 6-3. Mayer squandered five break points before submitting the opener to the
Russian competitor but made a terrific comeback in the following set. Davydenko became a bit too over-ambitious in the second set and took lots of unnecessary risks to bestow easy opportunities to his opponent. Mayer reeled off 23 of 32 serve points in the
set, breaking the Russian serve once to reach set points at 5-3. The contest came to even terms as the German clinched the second set at 6-3.
Davydenko backfired at his opponent in the decisive set, completely devastating him with his power game. The Russian collected 16 of 22 serve points and cracked two breaks in the third set en route to victory. Davydenko finished
off the affair in the most assertive manner at 6-1 and bagged his career 21st ATP championship title.
