Question:

Nikon D300 Versus Other Digital SLR Cameras......?

I have a good amount of money saved, enough to buy a Nikon D300 with the 18-200mm VR Lense. The question is, are there other digital SLR's that will give me the same Clarity, Sharpness, and Quality that I have heard about the Nikon D300?

What I would mainly be shooting is portraits and landscapes. I am needing something that would produce professional looking images, that can be enlarged without loosing the quality, etc

  1. The D300 will give you all that you have said you are looking for here and more. It has advanced focusing and metering, a newer color processing engine a better sensor. To get better images from a DSLR you would have to go to a full sized sensor and pay many times more. This camera is a work horse rated at hundreds of thousands of shutter actuvations. It has a titanium frame and seals to keep out moisture and dust so you can shoot in the most demanding conditions

I love mine and feel it was worth every penny

  2. I have upgraded from the D200 to the D300. I don't regret it for a second. It is a great camera that has a faster autofocus system, card write times are faster, and the battery life is close to double that of the D200. But, I need those things because I do a lot of action photography! The D200 is an excellent piece of equipment that you should consider for the type of shooting you are going to do.

I think you would be happier with the results if you spent about $200 more than the you would on the D300/18-200 and got a D200/17-55.

The 17-55 is my workhorse lens for weddings, portraits, and general shooting. It is sharp as a tack! It is wide enough for landscapes and long enough for portraits.

If you have $2500 to spend on a camera, you will get much better results if you spend $1250 on a lens and $1250 on a camera than you will spending $2000 on a camera and $500 on a lens.

  3. All DSLR's are capable of producing professional looking photos that you can enlarge to your hearts desire.

The Nikon D300 is a fabulous camera but is really more than most people will ever need. If this is your first SLR I would look at some of the lesser models and invest the extra money into some high quality lenses. Contrary to what many people believe it is the lens that makes the difference in image quality not the camera body.

The biggest difference between the D300 and some of the lesser models is build quality and some advanced features that most people will never use. It is designed for professional use day in and day out.

If this is not what you need then get a cheaper model and a good lens or two. I don't want to discourage you from buying a great camera but if you are not a pro or advanced amateur you probably don't need it.
