  1. i must shake my head in shame....

Canon was the way to go.......

  2. Yes it will work. Keep in mind, if it was made after 1957, it will fit your camera, even if it won't autofocus on your Camera. Yes, this lens is compatible with your camera, however it doesn't have VR, which isn't good, because you stand a higher chance of getting shake in your photographs. You can only use this lens in bright conditions, it's a nice lens though.

  3. You came too the wrong place for advice so far every answer is incorrect plus one annoying canon user comment.

The 18-55 and the 55-200 are AF-S lens so they will auto focus on the D40.

I supply you with links to prove that they are AF-S lens.

    AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR

    AF-S DX VR Zoom-NIKKOR 55-200mm f/4-5.6G IF-ED

The 70 -300 comes in two flavors,  the VR one is an AF-S which will auto focus with the D40 the one without VR is not an AF-S which will not auto focus with the D40 but ever thing else will work on it.

Will auto focus with the D40.

Will not auto focus with the D40

  4. I have to disagree with the above post. I have used nikon since the 70's and still love it, Nikon and Canon are both good cameras and they keep each other on thier toes, trading the top spot for advances back and forth. Right not IMHO Nikon has a lead on image clarity, and color saturation

And BTW for the canon folks that make an issue of this you cannot use canon lenses older than about 1987 on a modern canon. Thats when they changed the mount from the FD to the EF mount.  you can use any Nikon lens back to 1886 and still meter on your D40 and if you don't use the meter you can use lenses made back even further on the D40. On high end Nikons ( D3 , D300 etc )  you can even get metering to work on lenses made well back into the 70's

Now off my soapbox and on to answering your question

YES the lens is compatible. It will mount on the camera perfectly. It will meter properly it will send information back to the camera, it will work with all speedlights like the SB800 perfectly.

BUT, it is not an AF-I /AF-s lens it is an AF lens. So on the D40 and D60 you will have to maually focus this lens. Its not hard to do. If you can use the ring to change the focal length for zoom you can turn the ring to focus just as easily.

This lens is a reasonable choice for a reasonable price. It has great crispness up to 200 mm and is a little ( but only a little ) soft 200  to 300 . to quaote ken rockwell on this lens "If you want complete sharpness wide open at 200 mm and beyond you have to spend at least five times as much on a huge 80-200mm f/2.8 or ten times as much on the 80-400mm VR." If you alread have a lens to 300 the question to ask is if that extra zoom will is really needed for what you do

Added: brian_rm... Every answer is NOT incorrect. Nikon 70-300mm F/4.-5.6G  will not autofocus,  As you say the VR version of this lens will autofocus but she did not ask about the VR version and did not specify if it is the AF-S or AF version. The AF-s version is around 550 US and the AF version without VR about 140 dollars US. While it is possible that I misunderstood which lens she was looking at the information I gave was not wrong. She also was not asking about the 18-55 and the 55-200 with VR as she already has those.

Nathans answer is not wrong either. A 1959 pre AI lens will mount on a D60 and will take pictures in manual mode. It will not meter or autofocus and it cannot be used in P, A, S as it will not auto index. Will the optics still allow you to take pictures and if you use an incident meter get good pictures ? Yep it sure will. But most people want TTL metering and the program and priority modes
