Nikon D40 will not focus

Question

Suddenly, my crisp images are all blurred...it's not a setting because even when I look through the viewfinder, it's blurred before I even take the image...doesn't matter which way I turn the focus lens. One way makes it super blurred, and the other way makes it fuzzy. It has never been dropped. I took the lens unit off and put it back on..that didn't help. The lens are all clean.
