  1. Nikon D60

I was looking for dslrs this past few days and I had the chance to compare some of them. I find the Nikon D60 to be the most reasonabl priced for the features it has. Good image quality, good sensor size, a huge array of available lenses and a sturdy body design. If i had more cash I'd go for the Canon 450D, a bit unreasonably priced but you are looking for a camera to use for at least 5+ yrs...

You could also look a the new Canon 1000D, the new entry level dslr, it's cheap for its class, well, being lightweight and made of mostly plastic and all. But you do get the Digic III image processor (as seen in the bigger, badder, more expensive dlsr's).

I would trust Sony on the point & shoot cameras, but for dslr's, I suggest you look for either Nikon or Canon. The best to fit your budget, then invest on the lenses. All photographers I've asked say it's better to invest on the lenses if they have to choose between camera body or lenses. Good luck!

  2. Sony's in camera stabilization is not as good as lenses with built in stabilization.   The lens will cost more for Nikon's "Vibration Reduction", but the lenses will last longer than the camera body in general, and perform better than body stabilization.

Keep in mind that some lenses will not auto-focus with a D60.  Not sure about Sony lenses and the 350.

    Look into a Nikon D80.

  3. Without hesitation, the D60 (though I would personally take the Rebel XSi over both of them).

Sony's advantages are that it has LiveView but the D60 does not, and Sony has Sensor based Image Stabilization so your lens purchases do not need to include Image Stabilization.

That being said, I don't know how much stock I put into these "benefits" since the image quality of the D60 is superior at every ISO setting except ISO 100 (where they are equal).  If everything else was equal, then I would say that Sony would benefit from these "extras" however they are not equal, and image quality to me is more important and trumps any other "feature."

  4. In addition, Nikon is a bit more durable than the Sony especially, when it comes to digital camera. In the long run, it will become more expensive camera or useless.

  5. I would go with the Nikon. Nikon has been in the camera business for much longer. They have more available lenses and accesories. If you ever plan on going further with your photography Nikon will have the pro model cameras and lenses you will need.

I would also look at the Canon Rebel XTi or XSI.

Canon and Nikon are the top camera companies and the choice of professionals. You can't go wrong with either.

I'm not saying that the Sony is a bad camera but at this point Nikon and Canon simply have more options.
