Hey,

I have been looking on getting my first Digi. SLR for a few months now, and i'm making my purchase next week, I have narrowed it down to the Nikon D80 or the Canon 450D, I really can't decide which to go for! I'd mainly be using it as a hobby, architecture and pictures of my friends is what i would be using it for, any suggestions and reasons as to which you would go for?

thank you :) x

  1. Here's the thing... when you buy a DSLR, you buy into a system... all the lenses, flashes, and other accessories have to be compatible with that system... so choose carefully!

I use Canon myself and am very happy with their products... of course a Nikon user will tell you the same for Nikon though.

I suggest you take a look at their other products too before making your final decision. Either camera is a great choice. Good luck!

Here is a side-by-side comparison that may help you choose:

The Canon 450D is also #2 on the top 20 cameras right now... the Nikon D80 at #10. Canon is also the #1 brand right now. See it here:

  2. the canon is the one i would choose because it is easier to hold. the buttons are more accesible and it is just a really nice camera.

And the fact that the 450D is in a different class of DSLR than the D80.  The D80 is technologically placed between the Canon 450D and 40D.  To compare apples to apples Canon has no camera in the features and price range of the D80.

    On the pixel count issue.

And finally ... you will be buying a system when you buy your first DSLR.  Nikon by far has the largest system of cameras and lenses.  The D80 can use all but a handful of Nikon lenses made since 1959 ... Canon's EOS lenses made since 1987.

  4. Get The Nikon D80....

It's A Better All Around Camera...

don't mind the 450d's three inch screen, and it's twelve megapixels, it's cheaper than the nikon d80, and it doens't have a status l.c.d screen, which you need when you're out in the field. Physically, the nikon d80 is much larger than the 450d, it looks more professional, and you're not going to look amateur with the nikon d80 DSLR camera. You should get the nikon d80 hands down, it's just a better camera.... you can get some more lenses, and improve what you can take. Don't mind canon, their cameras are so annoying these days.

Nikon is just a better camera brand all together.

  5. The canon has a larger amount of mega pixels and is about £100 cheaper than the Nikon

However Nikon are renown for being the best at SLR's and the lens included with the Nikon has a larger range.

So really it depends if you want to spend more money to get a better camera - having said that if it was me I'd buy the canon as there is not much in it for £100
