Nikon ED AF-S nikkor 300m 1:2.8 D II connecting to...

Question

have a D80 workin fine, with locked lens apeture on a 70-200m 2.8 . when I try the same with a 300 I just got, I just get the " FEE" on the control panel and no shutter release. I lock the lens at f/22 have camera body mode P (tried other modes) but it wont let me choose any camera body apeture. I've cleaned the 'lugs' and it is definatlely locked in. any suggestions most appreciated!
