Nikon d40 or Panasonic lumix dz-18?

which would you choose as the better all around camera?

The nikon D40 is one of your best options because if later you want to have more zoom you can by a zoom lens. but if you don't care about lenses then go for the lumix.

another thing about the d40 is that you have many manual options to use like setting your shutter speed or aperture.

also you can manually focus which can come in handy if your the camera will not auto focus on its own in weird lighting conditions.

if cost does not matter go for the D40

Definitely the Nikon d40

Nikon's are known to be the best photographer camera.

The D40 is a true DSLR and has a sensor about 15 times larger than the SLR-like P&S Lumix.  In addition, the D40 uses interchangeable lenses.  The Panasonic has but one lens permanently attached to the camera

The Nikon D40 because you can add to it. The lumix is a point and shoot that really doesn't challenge you into making better pictures.
