Nikon d40 shutter error?

my camera's getting a error and won't take pictures.

i looked inside and behind the mirrors there is something wrong

- not sure how to describe it - there's three panels and their not lined up right.

any ideas as to how badly it is messed up and how much it might cost to have it fixed?

Your description of the problem leads me to think the shutter has been damaged. If that is the problem, you may have to pay for repairs.

Your Owner's Manual should have a list of Authorized Service Centers. Find the one closest to you and send your camera in for an estimate.

You can call 1-800-645-6687 (Nikon Service & Repair) and ask if there has been a problem with the D40 shutter. There might be a recall that will repair it for free.
