  1. I've  had Nikons since the 70's and still love them. would recommend the D60 by Nikon. The D60 is a great entry level DSLR. It will let you have control over your shots to go with your skill level. Everything from a flexible program mode where the camera does many of the functions to a full manual mode where you set everything as you want it. It give good quality pictures. The D60 give you a number of things you want. It has newer firmware and image processors, designed for the 10 mp sensor. It has an "Active Dust Reduction System with Airflow Control ". Nikon not putting a system on the D40 to deal with dust is one of the biggest drawbacks I see to the D40 ( though I think its still a great camera for the money) If you change lenses dust will get in and the camera needs a system to deal with it. With the D60 you get a VR lens. That will help with low light situations ( they may offer that now with the D40 but originally it was not) . The D60 has Adaptive Dynamic Range. Nikon calls it "Active D-Lighting," it lets you save some highlights that my otherwise be lost. It has a newer better metering system than the D40.

Nikon does put image stabilization into the lens. Stabilization in the lens works faster and smoother than stabilization made to date in the camera body. Nikon only has liveview on a few models and the 60 is not one but due to the mirror having to be locked up liveview with any DSLR will not work the exact same way as liveview on point and shoots. I have liveview on the D300 and seldom use it

  2. The olympus has live view, in body stabilization, and a little more the Nikon doesn't have. The Nikon doesn't have live view, you have to buy Image Stabilization, or VR, as Nikon calls it in lens, which is usually very expensive. So, when it comes to the camera itself, i would say that the Olympus is a better camera.

However, when you buy a camera, you don't just buy the camera, you buy into the system. Nikon has many more lenses, and accessories for their cameras versus Olympus. So, just for that reason, i suggest that you get the Nikon. You have more variety in lens focal lenghts, cheaper accessories, etc.

However, if you're not going to use it like professionally, and don't plan to get much extra lenses, The E-510 may be a great option for you. It depends on how versatile you plan to be in your photography.

  3. Go with the Nikon... I've heard some bad things about entry level Olympus cameras. Besides, by getting an Olympus camera you're limiting the lenses you can get as there are more lenses for Nikon cameras. And, no, at least in my opinion live view is not important.

  4. Not sure about the E-510 but I have the E-500 and it is great it takes great photos and great picture quality
