  1. They are both great. The Canon may have a better selection of lenses to choose from though.

  2. The other answer is wrong about Canon having more lenses.  Nikon is just as good as Canon in that regard.

Both Canon and Nikon make fine cameras and on an all-around basis, you won't go wrong choosing either brand of camera.

Thus, it simply comes down to two things:  1) what can you afford and 2) which camera feels right in your hands.

I personally prefer the Nikon cameras in my hands, but you may feel differently after handling them.

So: handle both Nikon and Canon cameras (the least expensive ones are the Nikon D40 and Canon Rebel XT) and see which one feels "right" in your hands.  Check the feel, whether the buttons are in the right places for you, the build quality of the camera, the menu system, etc.  Think of it like test driving a car, only it's a camera.

That's a lot better than getting opinions--I say, trust your own experiences and test handle the cameras.

  3. Smaller hands=Nikon

    Larger hands=Canon

That's been my experience, I own a Nikon D80 and I'm really happy with it, it's been a great camera to learn on it has a lot of the same functions as a D200 but it wasn't to overwhelming.  The body isn't going to matter either way in another couple of years the lens your going to buy are whats really important.  Just a word of advice no matter what way you go instead of getting a kit lens you should buy a 50mm low apeture lens like the nikon has a lens that's 50mm that's a f/stop of 1.8 which makes it really good for low light situations and it's only $115 that's what I wish I would have done, also if I had it to do over again I would have saved the money I put into the Nikon brand name and bought a Pentax and been able to afford a couple more lenses.  Pentax has a huge market of older lenses and they're really affordable also it could be 50 years old and it will work on their digital cams.
