Nile Virus from USA trip?

Went to New York early July & the weather was stifling. On return both my wife & myself were unwell with sore throats etc, which we thought might be down to air conditioning which seems to be absolutely everywhere in USA. My wife's condition cleared up after about 7 - 10 days but mine didnt, went to docs who has put me on penecillin....now about a week later no improvement, got sore tongue, sore throat /chest/ very tight/chesty cough & heartburn....going back to docs next week. However last Friday the wife went to the blood donors to give her routine donation but was refused as the health questionaire asked if you had recently been overseas and the technician explained that they dont accept donations if you have been to America at this time of year due to the " Nile Virus"...has anyone heard of this before or got any idea how long it lasts as I feel really low with it right now.....I'm taking the antibiotics, eating garlic /honey/doing steam inhaling/applying menthol chest rub etc but nothing seems to shift it

  1. I have heard of West Nile Virus although I don't know a lot about it. If you've been to the US between May and November then you cannot donate blood of 28 days following your return, which is where I heard about it.

Take a look at this article - http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/west-ni...

If you're at all concerned then  go back to your doctor and tell them about your travel history and your concerns. Hope you feel better soon.
