Nina Keijzer, Anneloes Van Veen retain lead as rough conditions prevail: 470 Junior European Championship
Netherlands’ Nina Keijzer and Anneloes Van Veen managed to retain their overall lead of 470 Junior European Championship despite a second place in the only race on Day 3 at Nieuwpoort, Belgium. The Dutch team is now leading the standings with seven points
after five races. Day 3 could only feature one race due to the weather conditions which grew severe during the first race.
The breeze was favourable in the beginning of the race, gusting at about 17 knots but as the sailors entered the course, it increased up to 22 knots. The shifty winds went up to 30 knots at the end of first race, forcing the management to conclude the day
with just one race completed.
Germany’s Annika Bochmann and Anika Lorenz secured fourth place in the race but still occupy the second place with 10 points. In the later races, they can be strong challengers for the Dutch sailors. The Germans would have been on top had they clinched the
race on Day 3.
Speaking to the local media at the end of Day 3, Lorenz said, “We had a really good start and a really good upwind so were at the top mark in fourth or fifth. We then caught some boats on the first downwind to move into first which we held during the second
upwind and reach, but then on the last downwind we capsized.”
She added, “It was the fastest capsize we have ever had. we swam so fast back to the boat and as the boat hadn't capsized completely we released all the ropes and all the sheets and it was a quite fast recovery.”
