Nine regions confirm to contest at the Rock City Marathon – Athletics news
With the announcement of the Rock City Marathon to commence on September 4 at CCM Kirumba, so far, nine regions have confirmed their participation in the event. The marathon, which is a joint venture of Capital-Plus International (CPI), Athletics Tanzania
(AT) along with Mwanza Regional Athletics Association of Tanzania (MRAA), is regarded as one of the major running event of the country.
Shedding light over the pace of work going on to make the event a success, Zaitun Ituja, the coordinator for the race, said, “Preparations for the third edition of Rock City Marathon are in full swing. Nine regions have so far registered for the race. The
previous two editions attracted some of the best athletes in the country, I am optimistic this year’s event will follow that tradition.”
Ituja added that the names of regions which had confirmed their participation in the event were Dar es Salaam, Shinyanga, Arusha, Tabora, Manyara, Kagera, Mara, Singida and Mwanza. She was of the view that an entrance opportunity still had not been closed
and rest of the regions as well as individuals still had a chance to get registered.
As per news, the event will be divided into four main categories, out of which, according to Ituja, the major event will cover a 21km long track for both men and women runners. Among other races which the Rock City Marathon was going to observe, there will
be a five kilometre corporate classic race and a three km race for the people having disabilities. Moreover, there will also be a three km race for citizens of 55 years and above.
Revealing details of the run, which is primarily an attempt to promote the tourism industry of the region through sports, Ituja said, “The half marathon will start at the CCM Kirumba Stadium at 7am, taking different routes and back to the stadium for the
final lap. Mwanza is rich in tourism attractions and we intend this marathon to highlight Mwanza’s potential in tourism.”
For promoting the economy of the region through a healthy activity such as marathon running, organisers of the event will also need to consider the fact that they need to promote the meet through aggressive advertisements. They shall also need to target
potential tourists through the campaign, only then this race may succeed in achieving its real goals.
