Nine-run third inning powers New York Yankees to 17-7 rout of Oakland Athletics – MLB Update
It was a fun filled night at Yankee Stadium as the New York Yankees scored 17 runs, helped by a nine-run third inning, to obliterate the Oakland Athletics 17-7 on Friday, July 22.
The 17 runs were the most by the Yankees at the new Stadium. The runs came in plenty in the third inning when Mark Teixeira hit a grand slam and Nick Swisher chipped in with a three-run homer to completely wipe out the A’s.
The Athletics began the game and their job in style when Scott Sizemore sliced the ball to right field allowing Coco Crisp to add the first run for the Athletics. Conor Jackson added another run in the second inning to impose a two-run lead on the Yankees
who had skipped batting practice due to extremely high temperatures.
Yankees responded in the second inning when Robinson Cano added the first run for New York and Swisher followed suit to equalise the score 2-2. Eduardo Nunez finally made up for Alex Rodriguez when he added the third run for New York and Francisco Cervelli
quickly added the fourth helped by Derek Jeter’s hit to take the lead to two-runs with the second inning still in progress. Brett Gardner helped the lead to three-runs and the score stood at 5-2 when the second inning concluded.
The Yankees opened the third inning in style with Swisher smashing a three-run homer to complete his 11th home-run this season. The hit distanced 411 feet and allowed Teixeira and Cano to complete their runs. Jorge Posada added one run to the
ever increasing score tally before Nunez added his second for the game to complete ten runs for the Yankees.
Trevor Cahill, the A’s starter, was replaced at this point after conceding ten runs in two innings. It was a miserable performance and Cahill was rightly awarded his ninth loss for his lack-lustre showing at the mound.
Michael Wuertz replaced Cahill with the intent of halting the flow of runs. Teixeira, at-bat with loaded bases, had other plans however. Teixeira hammered Wuertz for 347 feet home-run to complete a grand slam. Teixeira’s hit allowed Cervelli, Derek Jeter
and Curtis Granderson to complete their runs and take the score to 14-2. At this point, although with just three innings played, the Yankees had virtually stolen the show.
The A’s did not lose hope and rallied to add five-runs in the fourth and fifth inning combined. This, however, was not enough to match the Yankees who completed their 500 runs this season in the game.
The Yankees ended the game in style, adding three more runs for the final score sheet to show 17-7. The Yankees had more for joy apart from the win. Jeter improved to the 25th position in all-time hits as he took his tally to 3011 after this game.
The Yankees would want to replicate this performance in the next two games of the series as well. It will be interesting to see how the Athletics respond to this pounding when the two teams meet again on Saturday, July 23.
