PlayStation Vita sales nowhere near 3DS’s as Japan just cannot seem to get enough of Nintendo’s latest offering.
Nintendo have not had the smoothest of starts when it comes to their latest entree into the gaming world with their 3D enabled multi-screen portable gaming device, the Nintendo 3DS.
After halving the salaries of a number of their own top executives, slashing the price of the portable gaming console and reforecasting their sales figures the consumer electronics giant ended the year on a high.
In fact, the Nintendo 3DS managed to sell more units than any other console in Japan, as it was declared the best selling console in the country; the console being the 3DS (Duh!) and the country being Japan.
The turnaround in sales has been pegged largely down to two factors: firstly, many analysts are pointing towards the price-cut as a major reason and secondly, the added support in terms of software, or rather games, has also helped.
Games such as the fantastic Mario Kart 7 and news about the upcoming Resident Evil: Revelations have spurred on the sales of the portable gaming device that at one point was set to be a disaster.
Almost to signify that the 3DS performed better in the latter part of the year it was also the best selling console for December. It held on to the number one spot of the weekly hardware sales charts for quite a while, (to be read as, ‘as long as one can
remember’) yet what makes the achievement commendable is the fact that it did so despite the introduction of a major competitor.
Sony launched their own product to rival the 3DS in the portable gaming console market, the PlayStation Vita, just a few days before Christmas. Despite a fair amount of hype surrounding its release, the Vita could not knock the 3DS off its perch.
The official figures, according to Enterbrain, show that Nintendo’s console was the runaway sales champion, with a rather impressive 1,492,931 units sold in the time period starting at the 28th of November right up until Christmas (the 25th
of December).
The PlayStation Vita finished a distant second selling less than half a million units or 402,794 units. It must be pointed out though that the Vita was released just eight days before the cut off period, which means that the Vita managed to amass that figure
in a relatively short time period.
There is no denying however, which console will be remembered for the year 2011, as it seems that almost everyone has a 3DS or is thinking of buying one.
Analysts are of the opinion that if the software sales continue to grow than it would only boost the sales even further.
