Satoru Iwata, the President of Nintendo recently stated that consumers were holding out for the next generation of video game consoles to hit stores.
Mr. Iwata has been in the news a fair bit recently, well gaming news at least, as the man in-charge of Nintendo has made a few very important announcements in recent days.
The first bit was bad news when, during an investor’s meeting, the president had to announce that the company was set to see record losses for the company in the next year. That was of course, according to the re-forecasted sales figures and taking into
account the appreciation of the Yen and price cuts.
The next tid bit, which was surely aimed to ease investor’s and in still confidence in the company was the announcement of the latest entry in one of its best selling series. Mr. Iwata was of course talking about the Mario series and more specifically a
new Mario title for the Nintendo 3DS.
As for the next generation of consoles, it seems the main man at Nintendo had done his homework and explained that the sales trend indicated that consumers were waiting for the new generation of consoles from Nintendo and its competitors.
He said, “Along with effects from out trade marketing activities in December which mainly focused on the Nintendo 3DS, we were not able to sell the Wii as well as we usually do.” Before continuing, “Whoever, not just the Wii, but the overall performance
of home consoles in December was lower than the previous year.”
He explained how the consoles sales figures during peak season had declined over the years.
“In Europe it resulted that out of the home consoles, the Wii sold the most in December however, we can see that the beginning of the year-end sales was slower and the peak was lower compared to that of the previous year.”
So with the trend showing a drop in overall sales figures for all the current generation of video game consoles it seems that the time is ripe for the Wii U, Xbox 720 and the PlayStation 4 to make their way into the market.
