Nintendo defends Wii-U GPU – Video Games Update
Nintendo was quick to defend the Wii-U’s Graphical Processing Unit after remarks by Microsoft’s Phil Spencer claiming that Nintendo is playing catch up with the Xbox with the Wii-U.
Satoru Iwata, President of Nintendo, explained the rumours floating around about the Wii-U being inferior to Sony’s and Microsoft’s upcoming console as he said, “We cannot promise that the Wii U will never be excluded from multiplatform software for eternity,
but we can at least assure you that the Wii U will not have such a big difference as the Wii had in comparison to how, on other platforms.”
It sounds like Nintendo already knows what it’s in for in the long run and maybe that’s their plan all along. Maybe Nintendo is hoping for a repeat of this generation with the Wii U. Start off really strong with a console priced lower than competitors to
gain the majority market share then keep dominating the market by paying for third party exclusives and introducing new Intellectual Properties (IPs) to keep gamers interested.
Things might be different this time as Nintendo may be lacking in the graphics department eventually but they will still have online and support for hardcore games which was lacking this generation with the Nintendo Wii. The weak graphics of the Wii-U are
already evident from game demos such as Assassin’s Creed 3 and Batman Arkham City: Armoured Edition which looks good but not as good if they were being played on a high end PC.
At the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), Nintendo announced that there will be two controllers available for the Wii-U, the popular tablet controller and the hardcore controller which looks eerily like the Xbox 360 gamepad. The only real difference being
the ‘Right Analog stick’ and the ‘A, B, X and Y’ buttons switched. This means that Nintendo is also gunning for First Person Shooters and with a controller so similar to that of the Xbox 360, Nintendo will have no trouble getting the Xbox audience over to
its side.
It’s pretty clear that Nintendo believes that it can manage to stay competitive in the market even with outdated graphics if the console has online multiplayer and third party hardcore games support.
