Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of the Mario games, likens the PS Vita to the Nintendo 3DS claiming that the former is suffering the problems as Nintendo’s console was following release.
Nintendo is usually the first to the block when it comes to hardware. A trend that the company has continued by being the first to announce their next generation console, the Nintendo Wii U, just as did with the Nintendo Wii in the previous generation.
Yet, although the Nintendo Wii sold like hot cakes on a chilly winter afternoon, on its release the 3DS struggled for sales and require a major rethink from the company. However, with a price cut and a few solid games on offer, the 3DS cannot seem to stop
selling as it has topped Japan’s hardware sales charts for a record number of months.
"When we launched the 3DS hardware we didn't have Super Mario 3D Land, we didn't have Mario Kart 7, we didn't have Kid Icarus: Uprising,” Miyamoto pointed out and explained that the company hoped that consumers would, “find 3DS hardware promising,” before
conceding, “but looking back we have to say we realize the key software was missing when we launched the hardware."
As for the PlayStation Vita, Miyamoto praised the console itself, yet criticized the lack of software to compliment the hardware. He said, “It’s (PlayStation Vita) obviously a very hi-spec machine, and you can do lots of things with it. But I don’t really
see the combination of software and hardware that really makes a very strong product.”
Miyamoto is not alone in his point of view as analysts speculate that the Vita will continue to sell poorly until Sony release a couple of triple-A titles such as Metal Gear Solid, God of War or other such PlayStation exclusive titles.
Having said that, the Vita is set to welcome Mortal Kombat and Resistance: Burning Skies to its roster, with both games garnering quite an interest so far. Whether or not that interest materializes into sales is a whole other story and one that analysts
and gamers will both be keeping a keen eye on.
