Nintendo pushed against the wall by Sony
Before Nintendo became the first major video game company to step into the next-generation space by bringing the Wii U gaming console into the market in the final quarter of 2012, the industry analyst had very few good things to say about what was about
to be unleashed in the world of gaming.
The Japan-based company, however, continued to remain optimistic about the console and expected it prove the critics wrong by performing well in the market and also living up to the expectations of the gamers, especially the Nintendo loyalists, who had always
shown immense faith in the capabilities of a company that relied more on the entertainment experience their games and consoles offered instead of graphics, something that their competitors focused on.
Nintendo seems to have thought out the launch of Wii U very well, bringing some of its most prolific franchises to the shelves alongside the console such as Super Mario Bros. U and Pikmin 3.
The fans, however, were not thrilled to learn that the company planned on making them wait a while before giving them an opportunity to feast their eyes on a game that has become as big a franchise in terms of fan-base as Mario, Zelda.
Nintendo made it known to the fans that a Zelda game was in development and that it would be released in a few months’ time, but this was not enough to curb their anxiety.
To make matters worse for the company, Sony came up with the announcement that it would be releasing PlayStation 4 by the end of this year, i.e. the holiday season.
With the PlayStation 4 on its way, a lot of hardcore gamers needed very little convincing to stay away from the Wii U console and save their money for a console that is guaranteed to be more capable in terms of graphics and performance.
The first-person shooter enthusiasts never took Nintendo’s next-generation console seriously and now that they learnt about PlayStation 4 and became aware of its specifications, they found themselves with plenty of more reasons to laugh at Wii U.
Even the fans of the action, adventure, fighting and role-playing game genre know that the PlayStation 4 would be capable of offering visually stunning games, with their gameplay being nothing short of satisfying either.
Nintendo Wii U has surely lived up to the expectations of the critics, while disappointing the company that has invested so heavily in it. It remains to be seen if the console will be able to recover and make its presence in the market felt once Nintendo
brings more of its prolific franchises to the console.
