Nintendo to offer digital download of full games to Wii U owners
The latest update about Nintendo Wii U has revealed that it will give its owner an option to download the full games digitally from the very first day of its release.
According to the announcement by Nintendo, majority of the titles, if not all, will be available in both packaged as well as digital formats for the convenience of Wii U owners.
The first title revealed by Nintendo that is going to be available in digital format is the 3DS game New Super Mario Bros. 2.
The official announcement made by Nintendo about it climbing on the digital distribution band-wagon stated: “In principle, starting from this software, the company will offer the software titles that Nintendo itself publishes in both packaged and digital
download formats so that our consumers can choose the way to purchase them. Since the packaged and the digital download formats both have their own merits, we would like to offer both of these options to our consumers.”
Nintendo further went on to reveal in its announcement that, “we will start the digital download sales of packaged software that I just discussed, so our consumers can choose either the packaged version or the digital download version of the same software
from day one of the Wii U’s launch.”
For those gamers who prefer to get their titles off the racks, Nintendo stated that they will still have an option to purchase their games from retail stores. It stated that the retail store owners were allowed to set the price of the digital games to their
liking. Many believe that this would eventually lead to a few complications for Nintendo as the retail price may be lower than the one offered by Nintendo online store, thus making the latter an unattractive market for the gamers to get their hands on the
games.
Nintendo Wii U is looking to give Sony and Microsoft a strong competition despite the huge popularity of Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. It remains to be see if the new console would be able get the gamers excited during its introduction at the upcoming Electronic
Entertainment Expo (E3) that is scheduled to run down at Los Angeles in the first week of June.
