  1. It's the Japanese word for "Japanese"

P.S. "Nihongo" and "Nippongo" are both correct words for "Japanese" in Japanese and they have the same kanji characters: However "Nihongo" is more common than "Nippongo" which is considered a bit old fashioned

  2. Local tour guides need to improve their language skills to better serve foreign tourists, particularly the Japanese market.

“Majority of our tour guides who handle Nip-onggo-speaking tourists know and speak only conversational Niponggo, which creates communication difficulties when there’s a need to explain some technical terms,” Rafael Tura, president of the Cebu Association of Tour Guides, said in an interview yesterday.

    Street language

The Niponggo language that tour guides speak was not learned through formal training. It is the “crude street-spoken” type that makes communication difficult, Marson said.

He recommended a better tour guide accreditation system, application of stricter standards and introduction of a new classification system that recognizes skilled and qualified guides, who may get higher compensation.
