Nipple piercing seems to be infected ?

OK, I got both my nipples pierced a few months ago. For the past few weeks one of my nipples has gotten very swollen and hard below the piercing. The other nipple is just fine and how it should be. I clean them 3 times a day still and it does not appear to be going down (as far as I have noticed). What is making it hard below the nipple? What should I do to make it go back down? I know I can take it out and let it close (but if you have ever got your nipples pierced you only want to go through with it once). Thank you in advance -James
