Nissan 50 hp tldi maintenance?

We recently purchased a Macgregor 26m with a Nissan 50 tldi nsd50b. The sticker on the motor has the 2003 marked. We had some problems with the motor at Lake Powell, ( missing at various RPMs, having trouble throttleing up fast etc. , at Lake Tahoe the motor ran even worse , not wanting to go above about 2000 rpm and then eventually not even holding an idle) This started me looking at what I might do to be sure fuel delivery is not the issue. I decided to clean the vapor separator on my Nissan and that got me thinking what else may have crud in it on a 5 + year old motor. What can you tell me about cleaning the strainer on the fuel regulator or air regulator? The shop manual only says clean it if foreign matter is present. There are no instructions on how to remove and clean these. The manual makes it look pretty straight forward, just unbolt and remove a plate but the strainer is not shown. Are these strainers only cleaned as a last resort to some troubleshooting or would the cleaning be part of preventative maintenance?

Also is there anything else that is replaced before it fails like the thermostat, fuel, air or oil filters, or the high pressure fuel filter? The motor is five ears old

I have also seen online discussions that mention that the tldi around 2003 may not have had it's ECU programmed for high altitudes? Any truth in this, any way for me to check?
