Question:

Nissan Qashqai diesel smell in cabin

A question was asked here some time ago about the smell of diesel inside the cabin of the Nissan Qasqai. I have a 1.5 dci and the smell of diesel comes through the aircon. What is the cause of this problem? I don't think it related to the exhaust because we also have misfiring problems which started around the same time.

  1. It's a known fault - give your local Nissan dealer a ring.

  2. It's a newish car take it back to the dealers and ask them if there has been a recall on it.

  3. It is a known problem, fuel leaks from the diesel leak off pipes, when the engines are built the leak off pipes are held into place at the injectors by a special "R" clip, on the end of each pipe is a special seal, when the pipes are pushed into place, the person fitting the pipes were instructed to push the clip inwards, which releives the pressure placed on the seal as it is fitted, unfortunately the person/people  fitting the pipes have not been pushing the clip inwards, as the pipe is pushed into the injector body, the clip damages the seal and it's only a matter of time before the fuel leaks pass the seal and you smell diesel!!

    TIP!!

When the dealer fixes the problem, make sure they clean/wash the under tray properly, the tray has a foam stuck to it for the reason of catching spillage. The foam "stinks" if it is not cleaned!!

    Hope this helps.

ps Make sure they check for any outstanding campaigns whilst it's into the dealers and make sure you road test the car with a technician too, there is also a fix for the misfire/surging at about 2500rpm.
