    There are four principle groups of biomolecules. Proteins are made of amino acids, each of which contains nitrogen (see http://www.biochem.ucl.ac.uk/bsm/dbbrows... for structures). Nucleic acids are made of nucleotides which contain a fair amount of nitrogen as well, especially in the purine bases (see http://distancelearning.ksi.edu/demo/bio... for structures). There is more protein than nucleic acid in a living organism, so most of the nitrogen in a plant is in its proteins.
