Question:

No All the Time?

I babysit for a little girl who recently turned 3. All of a sudden, everything is a "NO!" at the top of her lungs. Even ice-cream is no, anything and everything is a no.

She is also throwing temper-tantrums for no reason at all. I know that this is normal, but how do I deal with it?

I baby-sit for her quite often too. Sorry if I have been a little unclear.

Thanks a million, K

  1. maybe shes having her period early and is going through PMS. LOL j/k just tell the arents to talk to her and if not then let her scream she'll ruin her voice in no time. she can learn from that

  2. Ignore the screaming and the temper tantrums, the more you pay attention to it the worse they will get. I walk over the top of my son when he is having a tantrum and leave the room, he always stops after a minute. The screaming is the Hardest to ignore!

  3. She has learned the word no...she doesn't know what it means...only that she hears it a lot.  Ignore it that's how you "deal with it".

  4. This is normal.  To counteract the screaming, talk to he in a whisper voice and say, "SHHH, we use quiet voices.  Can you use a quiet voice?"

As for the tantrums, you'll have to ignore them.  Tell her that you can't help her when she is yelling and throwing a fit.  If she continues try a count down method before putting her in time-out.

Tell her that when you reach one, she'll go to time out. Start at 5 and loudly count down to 1.  If she hasn't quieted down, then pick her up and put her in her bedroom, or a playpen for 3 minutes.

You can use the count down method for several situations.  When I tell my little one to do something, and he doesn't do it immediately, I start counting down.  Usually by the time I reach 1 he will do what I've asked of him.  If not, then it's a time out.
