No Coach for Washington Capitals before Entry Draft according to GM -NHL Update
Washington Capitals’ general manager, George McPhee, has shown that he is not in any rush to fill in the head coaching slot vacant ever since Dale Hunter resigned, by saying that there will be not any such announcement in that regard before the upcoming
2012 National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft.
Taking ample time to select the right coach is something the GM has explained on wanting to do and not rushing at all. Making the right decision is always important so that franchise will not regret their decision later on and have to make changes in the
middle of the season.
“I think you want to make a real thoughtful decision. You have certain things in your mind in what you want in a coach and when you do it in the summer, you just have more time. There’s no need to set an artificial deadline, to have it done before the draft
or have it done by summer camp," McPhee said.
McPhee, although not giving out a specific date for the announcement to be made, he did let the media know on Thursday, June 14, 2012, that they are narrowing down their decision now to the final few candidates.
“It’s been narrowed down a little bit but we’ll get there when we get there,” McPhee said. “I don’t anticipate doing anything before the draft. We’ll work on that, but we’re working on other things as well.”
Dale Hunter resigned from his position after leading the Washington Capitals to the Eastern Conference semi-finals, in which they were eliminated in a tight seven-game series against New York Rangers.
Having Hunter back is something they would certainly want, but unfortunately, that is not the case for them.
McPhee added that making the decision on who to hire is not basically the most important thing for them now as they have the whole offseason to look forward to. Right now, Washington is focusing on the draft and what they should do to make the club better
for the upcoming season.
“I think in terms of housekeeping some people like to get it done before the draft but I just don’t think it’s that important," McPhee said.
