No Google Play support for Ouya – Video Games Update
It has been revealed that there will not be any Google Play Store support for the upcoming Android powered $99 console which has caused fans to worry about the potential games library for the console.
The Kickstarter page of Ouya has raised over $5.5 million so far with 12 more days still to go until the fan backing ends and the project is funded. Even though the project started out really strong, surpassing its original goal of $950,000 in the first
day, it has lost most of its momentum as it has been stuck around $5.5 million for a few days with no significant increase. There are over 43,300 backers so far and chances are the number might cross 50 grand in twelve days time.
Now the support is unprecedented for a Kickstarter project as $5.5 million is a huge sum, but its mere peanuts when it comes to the funds required to develop and launch a console worldwide. Gamers are concerned if the team will be able to deliver or will
the shortage of cash end up causing Ouya to be downgraded or worst case scenario, cancelled.
The main catch for the console is the promise of free or really cheap games. Since the console is Android powered, gamers were naturally expecting that Google is likely to support it and the console would be compatible with all the Google Play Store games.
This however will not be the case as Google has not yet confirmed support for the upcoming console and this has left gamers questioning the future developer support for Ouya.
Ouya CEO, Julie Uhrman, is confident that the console will be a success as she believes that current generation console gaming is too expensive which has forced a lot of people out of the market. She believes that the $99 price tag for Ouya is likely to
attract a lot of attention and is likely to target new demographics.
There have also been rumours of a $150 PlayStation 3 Super Slim version in development. Ouya would be in hot water if the rumours turn out to be true as every sensible gamer would rather opt for the most powerful console in the market right now with a decent
library, Blu-Ray player and free online over the $99 Ouya which would have graphics equivalent to that of a typical smart phone.
