No Olympic rings to be put up on Edinburgh Castle – London Olympics 2012
It has recently been revealed that the giant Olympic rings that were planned to be put up on the Edinburgh Castle in the capital of Scotland cannot be put up. The Olympic rings were expected to be put up on the Edinburgh Castle before the Hogmanay celebrations.
It was decided by the officials of the Olympic Games, the Scottish government as well as the council of the city of Edinburgh that the giant rings should be put at such a spot that would make them visible during the Hogmanay celebrations. More specifically,
it was planned that there visibility would be such that they would be seen when the fireworks of the Hogmanay celebrations started.
However, Historic Scotland did not allow to put up the giant rings on the side of the ancient castle on accounts that it would cause damage to the old heritage of the city. Despite efforts made by the Olympic organizers, Scottish government and the council
of the city of Edinburgh, the Historic Scotland did not allow the giant rings to be put up. Part of the reason for not giving the permission for the Olympic rings to be put up was the time duration involved. It was planned that the rings should stay up for
nine months.
The alternate plan thought up now by the Hogmanay organizers is to put up a digital display of the Olympic rings. This display will be made on the same location where the giant rings were planned to be put up and they will also be visible as the fireworks
go up.
A spokeswoman for the Edinburgh Hogmanay commented on the matter in the following manner, “This isn’t a replacement for the Olympic rings going on to the castle. The two things were already being planned. Unfortunately, when the castle idea was cancelled,
there wasn’t enough time to find an alternative.”
On the other hand, a London Organizing Committee for Olympic Games spokeswomen expressed herself in the following manner, “We are still looking at alternatives and the UK is now leading on it. Anything that happens won’t be till next year though.”
