No Peyton Manning no glory – Indianapolis Colts and their performance in last NFL season (Part IV)
Continued from part III...
At Baltimore
"Losing (stinks), no matter what it is Whether it's football, if it's rock-paper, none of us like to lose. There's nothing fun about losing."
These were the remarks of Colts’ quarterback, Dan Orlovsky, after the team suffered its 13th straight defeat in the season.
Colts were yielding the same results from every game they played. The only difference was of the opponents as this time, it was Baltimore Ravens’ turn to beat them.
Ravens got a good start and scored a touchdown and a field goal in the first quarter. They scored another touchdown in the second quarter in which Colts scored a field goal.
Ravens scored another touchdown in the third quarter while Colts scored a touchdown in the final.
The final score settled at 24-10 in favour of Ravens.
Against Tennessee Titans
Colts got their first victory after 14 games.
The victory certainly did not help their cause of reaching the playoffs, but it definitely hurt Tennessee Titans’ chances.
Colts started well by scoring a field goal in the first quarter without allowing any scoring move.
Titans added two field goals in the second quarter to take the lead.
However, Colts replied sharply and got two touchdowns in the third quarter. Titans got a touchdown in the final quarter, but Colts added 10 points to win the game.
The final score settled at 27-13.
Colts’ defensive end, Robert Mathis, said after the game:
"It means a lot, but we're a proud ballclub so one game out of 13 or 14, we still have a ways to go. Everybody held the fort today. We just kept chopping wood and the tree fell today."
Against Houston Texans
Surprise, surprise! Colts had won their first game of the season by defeating Titans and they stretched the winning streak to two games after beating Houston Texans.
Texans got a touchdown and a field goal in the first quarter against Colts field goal. The latter added another field goal in the next quarter, but were still four points behind.
Both teams scored a field goal each in the third quarter as Texans entered the final quarter with the lead.
Colts scored a field goal to reduce the deficit to only one point, but Texans also scored a field goal to once again get a four-point lead.
However, Colts finally managed to score a touchdown in the final minute of the game to seal the victory as the final score settled at 19-16.
At Jacksonville
After playing 15 games, Colts had won two after losing 13 straight. Their final game was scheduled against Jacksonville Jaguars.
Jaguars got a touchdown in the first quarter and both teams managed a field goal each in the second.
Colts reduced the deficit to only four points by scoring a field goal in the third quarter, but Jaguars responded by scoring two field goals in the same quarter.
Jaguars added another field goal in the final quarter in which Colts scored a touchdown, but could not get more scoring moves and lost the game.
The final score settled at 19-13.
What after the loss?
The failure only brought one benefit to the Colts – they got a first round draft pick in the NFL Drafts scheduled in April 2012.
It is widely expected that Colts will hire Stanford’s Andrew Luck, and since the team has now parted ways with Manning, it is inevitable for the management to bring someone of Peyton’s calibre to replace him as anything ordinary will not cheer them up.
