No Roman Grand Prix anytime soon according to Stefano Domenicali
There were a lot of rumours that there will be a Roman Grand Prix in the Formula 1 calendar after a couple of years. Bernie Ecclestone has been quite efficient but not so smart at the same time this year as he hopes to introduce a handful of new venues for
the sport in order to flourish Formula 1 all around the world.
However, Uncle Bernie should at least know that this would require a lot of patience and time. It is not going to be easy to hold so many new races. Growing Formula 1 is without a shadow of a doubt a necessity for the sport at the moment but what Bernie
is doing right now is more like rushing the sport all around the world.
On the other hand, Ferrari’s team principal Stefano Domenicali does not support the idea of a Roman Grand Prix or at least staging one in the near future. There were rumours that the Roman Grand Prix might take place on a street circuit similar to the one
in Monaco but logistically, it is not going to be as easy as it sounds.
Domenicali believes that the FIA should restrict each country to hold just one grand prix each season. The only country that holds two races currently is Spain. The Spanish Grand Prix takes place at the legendary circuit in Barcelona while the European Grand
prix takes place in Valencia.
Since the Italian Grand Prix is expected to take place until 2016, Stefano believes that there should be just one Italian Grand prix and that is at Monza.
“Our sport is increasingly expanding the number of countries hosting a grand prix and all the teams are in agreement about that. Therefore it is inevitable it will no longer be possible to have two races in the same nation,” he said.
The FIA passed the idea of a new venue for the US Grand Prix that is expected to take place in 2012. According to the 80 year old CEO, he is currently in negotiation with the FIA about an African and Russian Grand Prix as well. It would be interesting to
see a Russian Grand Prix anytime soon but an African Grand Prix requires some time.
