No Room For my yellow bellied turtle!!?

Question

my friend gave me her 1 year old male yellow bellied turtle with everything it needs and i have no room for it. the tank is 20 gallons, my dad is trying to convince me to leave the turtle outside to live in the tank or to give the turtle away but ill feel really bad because it was my friends turtle.. what should i do??

I am in Calif and have a pond...I have 2 Res that are 36 yrs old..

offer the turtle back to your friend and explain your dad won't let you keep it, if she does not want it back then find a good home for it, you can't release it honey, it can upset the balance of any wild turtles and wildlife in your area, if it is not native to your area it can cause so much harm to the natural balance, you can sell the turtle as a whole set up  and split the money with your friend, or take her out as a treat i am sure she won't mind, but putting it outside in the tank is really not suitable and letting it go could possibly be illegal depending on where you live and it could be the wrong conditions for a ybt, if your friend does not want it back then you are free to find it a good home, best of luck honey
