No Talks scheduled for near future between League, Players Association -NHL Update
Amazingly, the National Hockey League (NHL) and Players’ Association has still not been able to break the ice between themselves after a deadlock came into play with both sides not willing to budge on their respective stances.
The league wants to cut the players share in team revenue along with a number of other amendments in a new collective bargaining agreement, but the labour union has also cemented their footsteps and is not willing to let down their guard anymore.
Both sides that assured the media that they would be slowly getting back into the negotiation process as top executives from the league and labour union met behind closed doors in a limited gathering, but it seems like those meetings have not shown any fruit
as of yet.
The upcoming 2012-2013 NHL regular season is in serious threat to be locked out as both sides cannot find common ground up. Talking about the associations first counterproposal, it seemed like the league would cave into some of their demands, but playing
a game of catch the mouse, commissioner Gary Bettman and Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly are far from giving into anything.
"Obviously the first proposal they made on Aug. 14, we took the night to analyze it and break it down and figure it out," Daly said. "Depending on what this is, we may need to take time as well, but certainly there is nothing that would preclude us from
meeting on Saturday if there is a reason to meet on Saturday."
Prior to September, Daly had been confident about reaching a new deal by the September 15th deadline of the current contract, but looking at his statements now, there is no way that is possible anymore.
"We're almost into September now," he continued. "I would say the positive thing is I think both parties are committed, if there are reasons to meet and continue to move forward, to meet as often as it takes to get a deal done. But, obviously every day that
goes by it's less and less likely that we'll be able to come to closure on all of the issues we need to come to closure on."
