No Zombies in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, or MW4 or MW5 for that matter
Giving players the chance to mow down hordes of the undead is something that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will not be offering, come the game’s release.
Infinity Ward (what’s left of it at least) have stated that the popular Zombie mode from Treyarch’s iterations of the Call of Duty series will not be featuring on any Modern Warfare title, let alone the third part.
Infinity Ward’s creative strategist, Robert Bowling explained that although the two games may be similar, they were trying to find their own niche, rather than cheating off each others for success.
“Rather than trying to cannibalise each other, they do things that we would never do but have turned out fantastic - like their Zombie modes - and added new features to multiplayer that we would never add, just because they're a different style,” Bowling
explained.
It seems the ‘Zombies’ mode falls under that category, with Infinity Ward focusing on its own ‘Spec Ops’ mode, which sees two players pitting themselves against a host of enemies, vehicles and the clock, in a number of challenges. The mode, although
a success in its own right, has not come near to matching the hysteria surrounding its Zombie killing counterpart.
Bowling also explained how the core Call of Duty experience was the same in both the games, but the two developers were implementing their own ideas independently from each other. He claimed that it was great for the fans, as they would not end up
with the exact same title at the end of every year.
Or as he put it, “What Treyarch has done - and what I actually think is fantastic where we are now - is they've really taken Call of Duty in a different direction. No longer are you getting the same game every year, but you're getting a different style
of the same core Call of Duty design.”
Bowling also shared how important Infinity Ward considered feedback, not just on their own Modern Warfare series, but how they listened to the feedback on Treyarch’s additions to the Call of Duty franchise as well.
It seems that the creative strategist had plenty he wanted to share with the gaming public as he went on to definitively quash the rumours that were circulating about which platform would get a better version of the game. As PlayStation 3 users still
felt sore over getting, what they considered to be a sub-standard port, of Call of Duty: Black Ops.
Bowling stated that the game would “run equally” on both platforms and that Infinity Ward was devoting equal time and effort to both versions of the game.
Modern Warfare 3 is due out this holiday season and gamers can decide for themselves how much of what Bowling said was true.
