No action for Carolina Hurricanes' Derek Joslin after hit on Florida Panthers' Kris Versteeg –NHL
The National Hockey League (NHL) has proved during the 2011-2012 regular season that they are serious about every shot during a game that is aimed at the head in any way, due to the concussion epidemic that is being faced by the major league recently.
Carolina Hurricanes defenseman, Derek Joslin, was called in recently to put forth his argument after his hit on Florida Panthers forward, Kris Versteeg, during their matchup on Tuesday, November 29, 2011, and after a deep look into the incident, NHL senior
vice president for player safety and hockey operations, Brendan Shanahan, decided on Wednesday, that awarding any sort of suspension would not suffice.
"Any time a player gets a hit to the head, we immediately look deeper into the play," Shanahan said. "Sometimes, the actions surrounding the hit to the head lead us to quickly make a decision that this is not worthy of the supplemental discipline process.
This one was a difficult one for us. I decided in the morning that while I wasn't sure whether or not there would be supplemental discipline, I was sure enough that I had more questions about the hit and that a hearing process was necessary."
Since there was no penalty called into play after the incident took place along with the fact that during the replay, Kris Versteeg’s head is falling down and towards Joslin, which obviously results in contact, ultimately not being all one sided.
The incident occurred with less than two minutes remaining in the first period of the Tuesday night matchup and luckily, Versteeg made a comeback on the ice in the following period.
The 24-year-old Carolina defenseman is currently in his second straight season with the Hurricanes and has played in seven games so far with the club in which Joslin has on eassist only.
Joslin has a total of 77 NHL games under his belt, with two goals, 11 assists, for a total of 13 points. He is used as Carolina’s enforcer during crucial times in the matchup which result in him being physical at some moments.
It is certain that Derek Joslin will think twice about doing anything in the future.
