No action on day 1 of Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic due to stormy conditions
The organisers were compelled to call a lay day at the 2012 Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic that was scheduled to get underway at Dee Why point in Sydney, Australia, on Wednesday, April 18.
The unfavourable surfing conditions prevailing at the primary event site for the fourth of seven stops on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s World Title Series included stormy sea and strong winds.
Looking for a solid start to the event, the organisers decided to put the first round on hold until the conditions improved.
The contest director of Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic and former seven-time ASP Women’s World Champion Layne Beachley expressed her excitement about the surf forecast, according to which the beach would be getting graced by a promising tide for the
next few days.
Talking about the latest ASP Women’s World Tour event and the surf forecast, Beachley stated, “We’re seeing torrential rain squalls and strong gusty winds. The swell is building which is promising because yesterday it was as flat as a lake. We’ve called
the competition off for the day, but we’ve got a really good forecast for the next few days. It’s looking really good for Thursday, Friday and Saturday. It’s exciting having the Top 17 women’s surfers in Sydney.”
The contest director further went on to reveal that she had often wondered why she was doing this, but after setting up the event at Dee Why point, the fog in her mind has cleared up. She conceded that she takes immense pride in the event and while the event
is making its return for the seventh year, she wants it to continue for at least another decade.
Dee Why point is playing host to the ASP Top 17 female surfers who will be competing for the event title as well as the coveted ASP Women’s World Tour rating points that will eventually decide who gets to take home the biggest honour in female surfing, ASP
Women’s World Title.
When the event will receive a green signal from the organisers, the first round will kick-off with Australia’s Laura Enever taking on America’s Lakey Peterson and France’s Pauline Ado in the first heat.
