No action taken by WPBSA against Jimmy White on suspicious betting – Snooker Update
Snooker governing body, the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA) has completed a couple of probes in the recent snooker season which were conducted regarding some issues in the past snooker season. Several international potters were
fined, warned or suspended from the professional circuit which showed a strong eye of the association.
In the recent couple of investigations, the WPBSA fined Mark Allen and warned Stephen Lee for breaching WPBSA rules. On the other hand, England’s Joe Jogia was not only fined but also suspended from the professional circuit. Following the trend, the WPBSA
finished another probe about the former six-time World Snooker Championship runner up, England’s Jimmy White.
The WPBSA found suspicious betting patterns regarding Jimmy White’s matches in the past season. The association claimed that one of White’s friends, John Callaghan placed a lot of bets on his matches and won most of them which was quite suspicious and it
was assumed that the Whirlwind is involved in that business.
The story was published in Star as they investigated the man behind the bets, Callaghan, who told them that he is just a fan of White’s and makes his bets on his match. He further added that the veteran potter has nothing to do with his actions. The WPBSA
took notice of the matter and started a probe which resulted in White’s innocence.
In its recent statement, WPBSA said, “Following statements made in the Daily Star on Sunday 17th June 2012 regarding the betting activity of an alleged aid to Jimmy White, the WPBSA has taken the decision not to conduct a full investigation having found
no evidence of any breach of the rules.”
The statement added, “The WPBSA process of making enquiries is very thorough and has involved liaising with the Gambling Commission Sports Betting Intelligence Unit and the betting industry. The WPBSA have not found any evidence of inappropriate betting
activity in relation to the statements in this article or by Jimmy White and therefore no further action will be taken.”
The WPBSA will not take any action against White because he did not have anything to do with the suspicious betting.
