No breakthrough reported as Jacksonville Jaguars-kicker Josh Scobee deal talks continue – NFL News
Jacksonville Jaguars have finally come to the table to negotiate fresh deal terms for kicker, Josh Scobee, and some media sections have quoted anonymous people privy to the development speculating a breakthrough well before the deadline
of July 16.
In wake of the optimism that recent reports have expressed, it is likely that the stakeholders sign the fresh contract most probably next week. The only reason to delay it can be differences between the two parties about the payout matter.
The kicker has demanded a long-term and apparently hefty deal, and the team has already sounded to be rigid on the pay matter. As a matter of fact, they were reluctant to come to the negotiations table earlier.
Josh is joined by his colleague, Maurice Jones-Drew, in the long-term contract demand but the team has refused to consider MJD for fresh signing, expecting him to honour the remaining two years on his previous contract.
Jaguars are now reported to have started talking Scobee’s deal matter and hopefully the player should get a new contract before training camp, due to open later this month.
Since the negotiations process is into very initial phase, no firm timeline can be predicted for signing but some commentators stick to earlier stance that the next week looks to be realistic timeframe for reaching conclusion of the matter.
Scobee has already missed the entire offseason training activity and has recently sounded to be threatening to skip the training camp.
In any case, if the player is not given a new contract by the deadline of July 16, he will remain on the franchise tender throughout the season. He has already shown his resentment and displeasure to the tender option, and has not signed
it yet.
Jaguars with new owner, Shahid Khan, do not look to be in mood of making any longer or taller financial commitments to their players. They have been very cautious so far about their spending spree on hiring firing of the players.
Amid this there are some fears within circles closer to both sides that they might fail to find a common ground in the deal talks. This leaves the entire situation in limbo as far as Scobee’s participation in the training camp or playing
next season is concerned.
