So I just graduated high school in june. But I still have no car for college. the reason is my mom cannot afford one for me neither can i. i am very worried because college starts in like 5 weeks..i will be going to a local community college for about 2 years. my mom cannot afford one because she is a single mom raising 2 teens with no child support and she was laid off so i was gonna save up my work money for one but had to give almost all my paycheck to her for rent/food/gas bills, i had to use almost all mine because my brother is too lazy to help out and he had no homework and just smoked like all day so i had to do it all. what i didnt give out of my paycheck i needed for the union and toilet trees. my mom has tried but no one has been able to give me one yet. i need one. i cannot wait another year. i need to get back to school and make some new friends i am very depressed. any ideas? this is not mine nor my moms fault. should i call churches ? please help me!

  1. If you cannot afford to buy a car, then you cannot afford to maintain a car.   In most communities you can find deals on old "fixer-uppers" for a few hundred dollars but you need to factor in cost of insurance, maintenance, gas (!), parking etc etc.  How would you be able to keep a car on the road?

Unless you live somewhere where there is no public transit, take the bus.  If you live in an urban area and the college is close, get a bicycle for the good weather and bus it when it gets nasty.

"Give me a car because I want one to drive to college" is not a request that will engender much sympathy -- even at church.

  2. Well it seems like your question depends on a lot of other things. Do you have a job? If no get one. If so learn how to save. Set you bills on a big monthly calendar. See how your going to pay each bill with which check. Also from each check how much are you able to save. Then consider getting a used car from a magazine or auction lot. Never on craigs list or other websites like it. Unless you have a website to check vin numbers. You need to set a side money for fix it repairs. If you get a car from the lot unless your a intending to pay the full amount don't do it. You will ruin yhor credit for at least 7 years. How many credit hours are you planning to take because if you taking 12 credit hours then you must study 48 hours a week for each class. Its is recommended to grasp the intended subject. From the credit hours work it into your job hours. The sleep hours, traveling hours, eating hours, personal time hours. Pretty much if you do time management and don't get off your plan. You should be able to save anywhere from 2,000 to 6,000 by december. You don't have to starve yourself or deprive yourself of your wants but you do need to think about: whats a stake? what you want? what you need? What would make your life better? Don't forget after the car comes the car note, car insurance, routinely checkup, and miscellaneous issues that arise. But good luck!

  3. Go to your college and check out the bulletin boards. Often, people post messages about books for sale and rideshares. At SJSU, there was a rideshare program run by the university.
