No clearance certificate was issued to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625 – Cricket News Update
Danish Kaneria’s claim of having been issued clearance from the International Cricket Council (ICC), and the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), following his implication in Mervyn Westfield’s spot-fixing trial, has been refuted by the boards in question.
The Pakistani leg-spinner, who was recently named as the middle-man, who approached the 23-year old http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Essex-c783 pacer with an illegal proposition, had been arrested by Essex police, when the incident first happened in 2010, but was later released when his involvement
could not be proven.
Upon the re-emergence of the incident at a recent trial, where Westfield was given a four-month prison sentence, Kaneria insisted that he was innocent, and will fight to clear his name. Adopting a defensive attitude, the player and his lawyer, Farogh Naseem
maintained that he had been issued the clearance by Essex police, the ICC and the ECB.
However, this claim has been denied by the ICC in a joint statement.
"Following reports in the media in which Danish Kaneria claims to have been issued with a clearance certificate, the ICC, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 Cricket Board (PCB) can categorically deny that such a clearance certificate
was ever issued,” the ICC confirmed, on behalf of all three governing bodies.
The statement went on to add that Kaneria, who has not yet been cleared by the PCB’s integrity committee where his case is still pending, would be directed to provide an explanation, following Westfield’s accusation.
"The PCB also confirmed that the Kaneria clearance matter is pending before the Integrity Committee of the PCB where in the last meeting he was directed to provide copies of the tapes of his Essex police interview," the statement read.
Kaneria, whose career spans 61 Test matches (with 261 wickets), has not played for the national team since 2010, and his attempts to clear his name have been in vain. The 31-year-old, who is currently serving as captain for the Sindh team in Pakistan’s domestic
Pentangular Cup, also approached the Sindh High Court in Karachi with an appeal to end his suspension from the national team, but was turned down.
