No deal reached yet between St. Louis Cardinals and Albert Pujols – MLB News
The St. Louis Cardinals’ general manager John Mozeliak rejected on Wednesday, November 16, the rumours concerning the deal and return of Albert Pujols to the team. Currently in the list of free agents, Albert Pujols’ fate is unknown.
There have been reports that Albert Pujols’ agent, Dan Lozano has talked to the St. Louis Cardinals in the recent days. The meeting is said to have taken place on Tuesday, the first of its kind recently.
Albert Pujols was engaged in talks with the Cardinals over the new deal in February this year which was later stalled. The Cardinals had reportedly offered a $200 million deal with Pujols for a period of nine years.
However, since then there has not been any substantive talk on it. It all started on Wednesday, when the St. Louis radio-figure J. C. Corcoran tweeted that Pujols will "announce on Friday he's re-signing with the Cardinals."
As the tweet made rounds on Wednesday, Mozeliak was asked if the reported deal was true, Mozeliak remained pretty precise with three-word response: “No truth, zero.”
Pujols recently visited Miami where he was offered a new deal by the Marlins. There is no word, yet, as to how much the Marlins have offered to Pujols. Nonetheless, reports also suggest that the offer was not up to what Pujols had been expecting.
With the St. Louis Cardinals winning the World Series and having a roster replete with reliably strong hitters, there is less of a surprise why there has been some dilly-dallying in signing the deal with Pujols. Nonetheless, retaining Pujols will somehow
be a priority for the Cardinals.
Mozeliak also stated that the Cardinals were not considering Prince Fielder’s name. "I wouldn't envision that, given the makeup of our club, with [Matt] Holliday, [Lance] Berkman and [Allen] Craig," Mozeliak said. "It would allow us to give someone younger
more at-bats there. Our hope is to find a way to keep Albert."
As the talks held lately between the Cardinals and Pujols’ manager, the announcement on the final deal will be made clear if only these negotiations bear any fruit.
