No decision yet on Arizona Cardinals starting quarterback – NFL News
Arizona Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt has rejected the reports claiming that John Skelton will get the starting quarterback role in the regular season while Kevin Kolb will be ruled out of the competition, saying that no decision has yet been made
about the final starter.
Earlier, a media report quoted sources within the organisation claiming that Skelton had more chances of winning the role.
When asked to present his stance on the report, Whisenhunt reacted rather strongly and rejected it.
In their preseason opener against Kansas City Chiefs last Friday, the Cards gave limited time to Kolb and Skelton on the field.
Kolb was able to complete one of his five attempted passes, and gained 21 yards, while Skelton finished with completing three out of six attempted passes for 35 yards. He sent an interception as well.
Cardinals are going to play their next preseason game against Oakland Raiders on Friday, August 17, and Kolb is going to start that game. On the other hand, Skelton will start their third preseason game, to be played on Thursday, August 23, against Tennessee
Titans.
Whisenhunt has made it clear that there is no favourable candidate at the moment and that the player who performs well will win the starting role. According to the details present on the team’s website, the head coach said:
“As far as favourites and long shots we’ve never really thought about it in those terms. We’ve said all along it’s a process. Everyone wants instant evaluation, but we just don’t think in those terms.”
He added that the management will spend the entire preseason monitoring the quarterbacks and will announce the starter based on their performances. He said:
“All of it goes together. The game part is important, but I don’t pay attention to the stats as much. A lot of times when we look at the film, there are reasons for a pass being incomplete or the pocket breaking down. Production is important don’t get me
wrong. But the preseason is about finding out who handles it the best.”
Kolb started for Cardinals last year, but his injury allowed Skelton to get the starting role and the competition between the two is active since the end of the last season.
